Keep’em In Line

For the past ten years, I've been working on a project that delves deep into the intricate relationship between art, commerce, and social commentary. "Keep'em In Line" is a series that challenges the viewer to confront their own complicity in systems of exploitation through powerful, thought-provoking imagery.

The Concept

This series juxtaposes the silhouette of the Jordan sneaker with imagery of slave figures, highlighting the disturbing connection between modern consumerism and historical exploitation. Both slavery and the sneaker industry are billion-dollar enterprises, and this work aims to provoke critical reflection on our current consumer habits.

A Personal Reflection

My realization that I continued to enjoy Jordans despite their exploitative history drove me to create this series. It questions how deeply we are entrenched in a system that capitalizes on the exploitation of the human bodies, the Black body.

The Artistic Process

Creating this series was a meticulous digital endeavor, placing each figurine within the iconic shape. This work critiques how we spend exorbitant amounts on items produced under questionable labor conditions, reflecting a modern form of free labor.

Reception and Controversy

"Keep'em In Line" has received both praise and criticism. Some appreciate the bold commentary, while others question the use of sensitive historical imagery. I believe repurposing these symbols can shed light on modern consumerism and its echoes of historical exploitation.

Raising Awareness

This series is a call to awareness. By placing slave ship silhouettes within consumer products, I highlight our mental and emotional attachment to material goods. The small figures within the shoe silhouettes remind us of the lives impacted by our choices.
